Did you think that no one needs CDs anymore and this is the last century? It was not so. Chinese scientists today announced another impressive achievement. They managed to create a CD that can hold as much as 700 TB of information. One such drive can replace 28 thousand Blu-ray discs.
Until now, there have been no CDs in nature that can hold more than 128 GB of data. Similar four-layer Blu-ray is made by Sony and one disc costs a lot of money – about 2 thousand rubles. Therefore, one can only guess about the cost of new discs, if they enter the market.
The development of the new technology was carried out by a large team of scientists from several institutes at once: Shanghai Polytechnic University, Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology and National University of Singapore. Their goal was to create a storage medium in a standard diameter for modern optical discs – 120 mm.
A revolutionary disc is made of an unusual composite material based on nanoparticles, additionally doped with lanthanide with graphene oxide flakes.
Increased recording density is achieved with continuous lasers, while pulsed lasers are used to create Blu-ray and DVD discs. The technology was named “subdiffractive optical recording”. Scientists argue that the cost of creating one such media is relatively small, but even the approximate cost of disks is not yet discussed.
If the technology is tested and put into commercial use, it will be a new record for storage capacity. Nowadays, no hard drive can store more than 30 TB of data, and their more modern competitors – SSDs, are available in volumes up to 100 TB.
